I'll be very interested though in how well this insert mod works in real world driving with stock springs...

As soon as I get them back, I will do some extensive testing. I never speed over speedbumps as I see first hand the effects of people blasting over them even in trucks. At Nissan we get people in all the time on cars with less than 25k miles and needing new struts because the are speed bumper killers. I will take the RS up to Mt. Cheaha, the highest point in Alabama and test them on the road that runs down the back side. It is a narrow 13 mile road with very fast transitions, very tight 180* hairpins, and a fair share of hidden dips and bumps that made my old 91 SE-R crash into the front bumpstops on Eibach springs and KYB AGX struts.

Thanks Robie, and they are looking good. Can't wait to get them back.

You would only need the Saturn mod if you have my struts. My project thread has pics.

BTW, your ride height is not increased with this mod either, loss of travel is the problem as stated above...and no amount of dampening will make up for the loss of 2" of travel...especially with stock springs. You need very stiff springs to make up for the loss of travel, then you can worry about dampening...

You now have less than 6" of travel with this mod. Most speed bumps are ~6" tall, and at speed will cause the top of the insert to be crushed. I base this on my experience with this mod and the custom struts I built for Mitchell. The Blue springs in the photo would though, but they are definitely not what I include in my kit.

The custom struts I made for Mitchell are a completely different story though and not subject to the same limitations of this mod.

I'll be very interested though in how well this insert mod works in real world driving with stock springs...
When you said Don Grubbs mod, I figured they were Koni MR2 inserts. You could solve the travel issue by welding an extension on the bottom. What's the ID of the struts? If its greater than 44mm then you can use Koni "Cut-a Strut" inserts which have a bunch of applications and don't require welding on the top, they attach the strut with a nut and washer in the bottom of the strut that threads into the insert. 91-93 Sentra SE-R front strut inserts would probably be a good match travel-wise for the RS front and rear.

Wouldn't adding an extention also be adding metal into the CV shaft too?

No, it wouldn't considering there's a nice 1-1.5" gap between the boot and the bottom of my strut.

Default 88 Toyota MR2 Rear Strut Mod for Impulse RS

I used Don Grubbs mod procedure using the 88 Toyota MR2 Strut top threaded housing and MR2 inserts listed in the original RS Strut Modification Sticky. I will arrange the pics in order shortly, so you can follow each graphic in the correct step procedure. I wanted to get this up now.

I noticed u cut up some wood for a bump stop. How important are they, because i noticed when i changed mine 1 did not have any and the other was pretty much disintergrated into crap. So they are not on the car, should i look into getting something on there? Whats the point in them :S

wood for a bumpstop? where?

I left out the bumpstops for the front set of robies coilovers and noticed a lot of rattling I got fed up with it and cut in some bumpstops and no more rattling.
