I'll have to do a little bit of work to get a decent wheel rate, but 300/250 should be alright.

according to that in an earlier post by Robbie, the stock RS springs are 140 front and 134 rear.

Now robbie, you suggested 300 front 250 rears. Assuming I know nothing about spring rates, I'll guess that the bigger the number, the stiffer the spring. But that also has to be balanced with the weight it's supporting, right?

Why would the RS have softer springs? That makes no sense to me. I'd think the extra transfer case, drive shaft, and rear diff would require a higher spring rate.
I always "pre-sumed" that the spring rates had to do with how many pounds were required to move them 1 inch or some arbitrary number.

XS: Front Craprolla springs, cut (go figure) and shocks. Ride is soft, but the shocks are dead and right now is scary crappy.

RS: As told by the previous owner: "Corolla" shocks on front, Celica in the back (though modified I guess). The fronts resulted being from a Starlet, which are completely inadecuate (way too soft), I corrected it putting the GR-2 I had for the XS. Ride is freakin hard, but I kinda like it.

The front RS springs are in fact SOFTER than the XS according the factory service manual. Rears are about the same. Part numbers are different

Front Craprolla springs won't fit standard Impulse shocks. You will be able to install the strut and after a couple miles the spring will get out from the shock locking your wheel, causing the car to fall and scaring the $hit of you, if you're lucky enough to be alive.

Here the roads are destroyed, really, they look like the lunar surface in some places. But also the bumps on the highway require good stiff shocks to keep motion in check

I actually like the RTR/GR2 setup, I have mine installed with the coil over screws pointing down, the ride is comfortable enough considering how low you sit to the ground, and I can go 25mph over speed humps and I never bottom out.

I would suggest you at least try the RTR setup.

I am currently using RTR/GR-2's and the fact of the matter is, the RTR springs are too stiff/low for decently comfortable everyday driving. Great for Autocross though. I'll have to do some more research but I'm thinking I'll go with 300/250 as Robbie suggested.

I'd actually like stiffer springs myself. But I have no problem sacrificing comfort for performance. I'm probably going to swap front and rear springs (RTR) soon and see how that handles.

It'll handle fine. But the rears are really overloaded and underdamped. Honestly, you need better dampers before stiffer springs. I have the 450's on the rear and 350's up front. Hell, GR-2's can barely damp the springs with 450's up front and 350's in the rear.

I know that. I'm not going to get stiffer springs I'd just like to.
I'm getting tired of no aftermarket support and am considering just selling the impulse and buying something else which would remedy my problem of wanting stiffer springs but having no options for better dampers

Venomous you could gut the current shocks and bolt in cartridges like the thread already posted here on the Subie modified rear struts. I even got the link from that forum (though it's in my office PC ). It would be sad to see you abandon the Impulse given that you have get success in autocross circuit last year.

I am thinking about a solution for the XS. Go the Starlet shocks route (which I still have) that "would" match the Craprolla springs I already have or.... invent something.

Funny thing is the toyota parts vendor I went to ask didn't even know the difference between the shocks or springs or anything fact is he also sells Isuzu parts, though only trooper ones (we only got the Trooper as the Caribe 442 from 1983-1992). They were assembledin a plant that is located only 4 blocks from my home

I have thought about doing a strut conversion, I even saved my old struts just for that purpose.
There is just more stuff I'd like to do and all of it will likely have to be custom and I'm not sure I want to do that.
I'm considering building a rabbit if I end up selling the impulse.
