Default this is in wiki, what is it?

A non-Lotus innovation in the Impulse was the development of the Nishiboric passive rear-wheel steering system which adjusted the toe of the rear wheels by changing the rear wheel alignment through the range of suspension travel.

Does every ji have this or is it just a impulse or rs thing?

Ya know, I have heard others talk of this. It was supposta be a "design feature" of all the JI platform to simulate a RWD experience or something.

I always called it loose.

How can you trust a website's information that can't even do basic background checks on their employees (as if we needed a reason to doubt Wikipedia anyways.)

I have Motor Trend Issue 1990 Dec and it says on page 84:

"To the rear, the one pair of trailing links and two pairs of horizontal lateral links work with special elastic a semi-rear-steer effect. As these bushings deform during cornering, they change the rear wheel alignment, causing the wheels to point slightly in a direction opposite to the front wheels (also known as 'out-of-phase'). As the body leans, the lateral link pull the rear wheels back in line ('in-phase') with the fronts. This generates movement akin to a 4-wheel-steer system without the added cost or comlexity;a nice surprise".

Indeed it does . I own a Impulse JI shop Manual and it mentions nothing of this passive rear steer either.

Sounds kool though.

It says that its just the Impulse JI. Seems that the Storms don't have it or the Stylus.

I've always wanted to tell someone, "yeah but my car has passive 'out-of-phase rear steering"

The Stylus XS and Impulse XS rear-end suspension components are exactly the same. I can take side by side pics if you dont believe that.

I would think it is part of the lotus handleing package then, especially if the storm doesnt have it.

Man, this thread is like a train wreck. Lotus suspension only changed springs, struts and anti-roll bars. Nothing in the geometry changed for the RS or the Storm. So, all JI models have this "feature". It's a pretty basic geometry that allows a little toe out in compression in order to allow the rear grip to get lower so that the car feels more neutral. Lotus models probably feel a little more neutral because of the bigger rear bar allowing more weight transfer to the outside rear tire and the bigger front bar helped reduce camber loss in the front, but all Isuzu JI models have this because the geometry is exactly the same. It's really nothing special. Most cars have toe steer to one degree or another. Most cause toe in under compression to enhance stability. A lot of sporty FWD and AWD cars have toe out under compression for the same reason we have it.

2nd Gen Mazda RX-7's use the deforming bushings to get "rear steering" but with a totally different geometry.

For its time it was a great improvement for the standard compact sports car.

Wish the Imark had this.
